Understanding Vata Season

In Ayurveda, each season is guided by a dominant dosha, and fall into early winter (October through February) is known as Vata season. Vata is made up of the elements air and ether, and its qualities are light, dry, cool, and mobile. You may notice this in the crisp winds, shifting routines, and the sense of constant movement in your environment. For nonprofit leaders, this season can mirror the pace of your work—lots of change, high energy demands, and the potential to feel scattered or depleted if balance is not intentionally cultivated.

How Vata Season Affects Leaders

When Vata energy is elevated, you might experience restlessness, overthinking, dryness (in the body or skin), or difficulty grounding. Leaders may feel more inspired and creative during this time, but without balance, that inspiration can spiral into overwhelm, burnout, or decision fatigue. Ayurveda teaches us to anchor ourselves with grounding practices, nourishing foods, and steady rhythms.

Nourishing Foods for Balance

To counter the light, airy qualities of Vata, focus on foods that are warm, moist, oily, and grounding.

  • Soups, stews, and slow-cooked meals
  • Root vegetables (sweet potatoes, carrots, beets)
  • Healthy oils (ghee, olive oil, sesame oil)
  • Warming spices (cinnamon, ginger, cardamom)
  • Warm teas rather than iced drinks

These foods support digestion, calm the nervous system, and help you stay resilient in leadership.

Grounding Practices for Leaders

As a nonprofit leader, you’re often asked to hold space for others, make tough decisions, and adapt quickly. To stay grounded during Vata season, incorporate practices that restore steadiness:

  • Routine: Keep consistent wake, meal, and rest times to create stability.
  • Mindful Breathwork: Slow, deep breathing or alternate nostril breathing calms the mind.
  • Movement: Gentle, grounding practices like yoga, walking in nature, or restorative stretching.
  • Warmth & Stillness: Create pauses in your day—perhaps tea in silence or journaling before work.

Leadership in Vata Season

This time of year, also offers gifts: creativity, visioning, and the ability to think outside the box. By staying grounded, you can channel Vata’s imaginative energy into innovative leadership, team inspiration, and fresh strategies for your mission.

As you move through the months of October through February, remember that your own balance is essential for the balance of your organization. Nourish yourself with grounding foods, steady rhythms, and calming practices. In doing so, you create a strong foundation not just for your health, but for the health of your team and community.

Reflective Journaling Questions

Take a few quiet minutes to explore these prompts and see what wisdom arises for you:

  1. Where in my leadership do I feel most “scattered” or pulled in many directions right now?
  2. What routines or rhythms could I strengthen to bring more stability into my days?
  3. Which grounding foods or practices feel most nourishing to me in this season?
  4. How does my own sense of balance (or imbalance) affect my team and the people I serve?
  5. What one simple daily ritual can I commit to this season to stay rooted and clear?

Closing Affirmation & Mantra

Take a deep breath, place a hand over your heart, and remind yourself:

Affirmation: “When I am grounded, I lead with clarity, compassion, and strength.”
Mantra: So Hum (Sanskrit for “I am that” — a reminder of your connection to stability, balance, and purpose).
